A Silent Hill 2 Remake with Blober as a developer can never work

Konami seems to have big plans with the long neglected Silent Hill franchise. A completely new part, some smaller projects and a remake of Silent Hill 2 are said to be in the works.

Above all, the latter makes me take notice, because the title is still considered one of the most memorable horror games of all time, with a gripping atmosphere and an emotional story that are second to n1. A new edition requires a lot of tact and an understanding of the subtle. All things that the supposed developer studio has missed in my opinion so far.

Blober wants creative freedom and that scares me

Just to clarify the situation again: Silent Hill 2 remake is not officially, and accordingly Blober team is not confirmed as the developer studio. However, a lot indicates this. Last year Konami announced a collaboration with the Polish studio, and even then everyone immediately thought of Silent Hill. That now seems to be true, because a clear dementia does not come from Konami nor from Blober after the leak.

This says Blober about the rumors: In an interview with IGN, Blouben boss Piotr Babieno said indirectly about the project. For the time being, you can't reveal anything, said Babieno, but you want to reveal the team's new game as soon as possible. For the time being, he could only say that the project is the IP of another company that is supposed to get a thick blue coat:

You can't fly in a prison. That is why we only want to develop games that we have the feeling that it is a title of Blober team, not that of others. Even with this project, which we cannot talk about, it will be a real blueberry game.

Dear horror god, let this holy chalice pass on blueber

Konami has to outsources: Konami has the problem that games have hardly been developed by their own studios in recent years. The publisher holds large brands in his hand, but can no longer implement them themselves, and the former members of Team Silent are widely scattered anyway. Keiichiro Toyama is working on the horror action Slitterhead, for example:

supposed expertise: The fact that the choice for a remake of Silent Hill 2 falls on Bloobe even seems to make sense at first glance. Because with Layers of Fear, Blair Witch and The Medium, the studio has delivered some horror games in recent years. But above all the latter finally showed me that Bloobe does not understand in my eyes, which makes really good horror. All the games mentioned lose all creepy factor as soon as we understand how the clockwork ticks behind the facade, because immersive gameplay, let alone a real danger to the characters, we are looking for in vain.

These facades are usually quite pretty. I have given great hopes in The Medium because it was obviously inspired by Silent Hill. Dark environments, the well-known with fantastic clubs, tank controls, fixed camera hinges and everyday people that are driven into crazy. The game looks like a (apparently successful) application letter for a Silent Hill project on paper. But all of these promises crush in their hands like dust after a short season.

Here is an example of an interesting idea that amuses in practice instead of scarying:

The faulty Blofober formula: In about half of The Medium, I realized that the characters are boring and hardly develop-the foreseeable end with the obligatory twist could not change that. The gameplay still hit me worse. Most of the time, about 90 percent of the game, protagonist Marianne cannot die and even if, these are boring Schleich passages that do not cause goosebumps but rolling eyes.

Horror just can't work so. The genre includes more than just considerable environments and good monster design. In order for the right mood to arise, conflicts are needed - both for the characters and the gameplay, and both are almost always available on the surface at Blober. The deeper I go, the clearer it becomes me that there is nothing there.

But Silent Hill 2 is a lake that offers us the more, the deeper we immerse yourself in it. For me, Silent Hill 2 from Blober would be like Pyramid Head in Silent Hill Homecoming: Pure Aesthetics and a farewell to the subtle terror, which is the first three parts of the series. It would be a lake brushed on a canvas - an image without depth.

Sorry Blober, but after a few of your experiments, my trust in the horror genre goes for zero. Not that the studio could not produce good games - I found Observer, for example, really gripping - but maybe horror is simply not the right genre. At least the team would have to sitting again with real consequences in terms of scary mood, profound story and exciting gameplay. But The Medium probably shows in which direction it goes, because the game was advertised by Blober as a showcase title with a decent budget and could serve as a blueprint.

However, every studio would have a hard time with a remake of one of the best horror games of all time. Even if it plays in the USA, Silent Hill 2 has a unmistakably Japanese style that a studio from Europe is probably difficult to catch up with. Let's hope that all fans of James, Maria and Pyramid Head will be gracious when the remake appears. Or - better still - that I only teach me better.
